Knowledge Hub Series: Summer site safety for signage professionals:

The British Sign and Graphics Association (BSGA) Technical Committee is proud to present the Knowledge Hub Series – a comprehensive collection of guidance documents designed to support industry professionals in achieving compliance and best practice.

Signage plays a vital role within the built environment, supporting clear communication, effective navigation, impactful branding, and essential health and safety compliance. However, the weather conditions in which signage professionals operate are often complex, physically demanding, and inherently exposed, frequently subject to the full force of the elements. Working within active construction sites, retail premises, public highways, high-traffic commercial sites and or working long hours in open, unsheltered outdoor locations, these roles demand both precision and resilience.

In the summer months, soaring temperatures and direct sunlight add further challenges. The heat radiating off reflective surfaces, the insulation effect of Personal Protective Equipment, and limited access to shade all combine to increase the risk of dehydration, fatigue, and heat-related illness.

These risks are magnified when working at height, where heat-induced fatigue or dizziness can directly compromise safety.

To support team members during the warmer months, these practical resources from the BSGA provide vital advice for keeping team members safe, productive, and prepared in high temperature environments.

The Knowledge Hub Series offers clear, practical guidance on the following summer site safety considerations:

Adjusting Work Hours:

Providing Shade and Cooling Breaks:

Prioritising Hydration:

Using Suitable Clothing and Sun Protection:

Monitoring for Signs of Heat Stress:

Understanding Heat Vulnerability:

In an industry where regulation is often minimal, maintaining best practice is essential. The Knowledge Hub Series equips members with timely, reliable resources to support compliance, foster safer working environments, and promote well-being across our teams.

By adopting these summer safety best practices, BSGA members can work towards reducing site risk, protect their teams, and demonstrate leadership in health and safety management.

The Knowledge Hub Series is a dynamic resource, evolving with industry needs. By promoting open communication and reducing barriers to information, we strengthen our community and ensure every professional benefits from shared knowledge and elevated standards.

We encourage all members to explore these resources, implement best practices, and share feedback to continue shaping the Knowledge Hub Series.
