We are delighted to announce that Perry Signs (London Limited) has been selected as the October winner of BSGA Members in Action, our initiative created to recognise and champion the outstanding work delivered across our diverse membership community.

The winning project, undertaken for Shepherd Neame Brewery at the historic Coach and Horses in Mayfair, showcases the enduring appeal of traditional signmaking and the specialist craftsmanship involved in producing bespoke heritage signage. Situated on Hill Street, the Grade II-listed pub dates back to 1744 and is recognised as one of Mayfair’s oldest surviving public houses.
As part of Shepherd Neame’s refurbishment of the premises, careful consideration was given to preserving the pub’s historic character while sensitively refreshing it for the future. The signage formed an important part of this approach, with Perry Signs commissioned to create bespoke traditional pub signage that complemented the building’s heritage and setting.

The project features a bespoke, handmade and hand-painted pictorial swing sign, a traditional lantern and carved lettering finished with 23ct gold leaf, which has been gilded and burnished to achieve its distinctive finish. Together, these elements bring traditional signwriting techniques and specialist finishing skills to the fore, demonstrating the craftsmanship involved in creating signage that complements the character of the pub.
The result is a distinctive scheme that reflects the heritage of the Coach and Horses. The combination of handcrafted pictorial work, carved lettering, gold leaf and traditional detailing demonstrates the level of skill, precision and attention to detail involved in producing traditional signage. It is a reminder of how these established techniques continue to have a place within today’s signage industry.
The project was selected for its celebration of traditional signmaking skills and the quality of craftsmanship demonstrated throughout. Working within the context of a Grade II-listed building required an appreciation of its architectural character and history, with the signage complementing the pub’s identity and wider refurbishment. Perry Signs has delivered a project that demonstrates traditional pub signage at its best.
