One of the UK’s leading suppliers of signage welcomes students into Gateshead facility

Gateshead-based signmaker Astley has continued their support of local Harlow Green Primary School with a tour for students and certificate presentation for the winners of a second competition.
Following the success of a Road Safety sign design competition earlier in the year, a second initiative invited students to create engaging graphics to identify each of the school’s designated play zones. The competition covered nine spaces across the school, including the Reading Gazebo, Construction Zone and Traditional Sports area.
Winning entries were selected by the Board, with the successful students invited to tour the signmaking facility at Team Valley Industrial Estate, where they received certificates recognising their achievement.
The students’ designs will now be brought to life through manufacture and installation at the school, helping pupils easily identify the different activity areas and encouraging imaginative, active and inclusive play within each zone.

Managing Director of Astley, James Mavi comments:
“It was another incredibly difficult decision for the Board, as we received so many fantastic entries from talented students across all year groups. The creativity, effort and quality on display made selecting the winners no easy task.
Our team thoroughly enjoyed reviewing the designs and welcoming the students to our facility, giving them an insight into what we do and the range of careers available within our industry. We are now looking forward to bringing the winning ideas to life by manufacturing the signs and installing them at the school for everyone to enjoy.”
Harlow Green Primary School’s Assistant Head, Leighanne Softley comments:
“We are delighted that the competition winners had such a fantastic visit to Astley – the children have not stopped talking about it since. They thoroughly enjoyed the activities, particularly the ‘Spot the Things’ challenge and coaster-making, which they were excited to share with their classmates back at school.
Our staff also commented on how welcoming and friendly everyone was throughout the visit and particularly valued the way Astley staff linked activities to future careers and opportunities. It was an engaging and inspiring experience for the children, and a wonderful example of how local businesses can support schools through meaningful educational engagement.”
Several members of Astley’s workforce will also be returning to the school in June as part of the company’s paid volunteer day initiative. Working alongside students and staff at Harlow Green’s Forest School, the team will help enhance the outdoor learning environment, supporting improvements to the space and reinforcing Astley’s ongoing commitment to making a positive impact within its local community.
