ESF Launch Sign Award Competition for FESPA 2013

The Competition will be held in conjunction with The European Sign Show , to be organised jointly by ESF and Fespa( Federation of European Screen Print Associations) which takes place in London, June 26th -29th 2013.

Concept

The concept of the Award is to seek from Sign Designers, Signmakers, Sign Design schools and Colleges, and anyone interested in Sign Design, their thoughts and ideas of a stunning sign for the year 2020.

At the end of this document you will see two downloads. The first contains details of how the competition is to be run and three photos of a Historic building in a major European city that forms the concept of this competition. The second download is the Entry Form.

The concept of the competition is as follows:

“The building has recently been bought by an International company who specialise in building refurbishment. During the next six years this building will be totally redesigned and reconfigured internally into a five star luxury hotel. The outside facade will not be changed in any way. Your task is to design external signage comprising a double sided projecting sign, a fascia sign and a monolith/totem sign which will reflect modern signage in the year 2020 and be in keeping with the exterior aspects of the new hotel and the surroundings.

The Design

The design must incorporate the letters R Y S T, although these can be placed in any order and location, but must be incorporated within each sign section. There will be no restriction in the size of the sign but visually within the overall design and the facade of the hotel will be a significant factor.

Specific attention must be given to;

The type of materials used, method of construction, sustainability, illumination, green footprint and recycling. A written explanation, of no more than 500 words, describing the manufacturing specification and parameters used must be included with the entry.

Competition Entrants

The Competition will be open to all Design Schools, Signmakers and Designers based in Europe. There will be three categories of entries. Design Schools, Sign Makers and Sign Designers.

Awards

The Award will comprise a Sign “Oscar” (Statuette) plus a certificate and benefit from the publicity which will surround the competition.

The Winners must be willing to attend the Awards Ceremony during the European Sign Show. Travel expenses and one night’s hotel accommodation will be provided (maximum of 2 people per category). The competition is expected to create a lot of publicity and interest throughout Europe. The winner in each category will receive a trophy to celebrate their achievement.

Instructions

The design must be submitted in pdf format, any written descriptive text within the entry form must be in the English language, and no identification of the entrant can be included within the sign design. Each entry must be accompanied by the official entry form which must contain all requested details about the entrant. Each entry as it is received will be allocated a code number which will identify it through the judging process. The personal identity of each entrant will be known only to the Secretary of ESF (who will NOT be a judge), and this information will not be divulged to anyone else. The code number will be used as the sole identity for each entry until the judging process has been completed and the individual winners are notified.

All entries once they are submitted in accordance with the instructions will become the copyright of the European Sign Federation (ESF). All entries will be uploaded onto the website of the ESF and the ESF Facebook page.

The Jury. Judges will be drawn from the Executive Group of ESF. The decision of the Judges will be final and no discussion, debate or correspondence relative to the Judge’s decisions will be undertaken. The members of the jury will not participate on the competition.

Entrance to the competition is free, although the Organisers (ESF) reserves the right to refuse any entry which in their opinion does not meet the specified criteria. The judge’s decision in all matters is final.

Each submitted entry must be able to be printed for display purposes. Each entry, after it has been received and before judging, will be shown on the ESF website and the ESF Facebook page. Visitors to these sites will be invited to vote on their preferred design but the total number of votes cast in this way will only count towards 40% of the Judge’s marks.
