Knowledge Hub Series: Ladder Safety report

The BSGA Technical Committee’s new Knowledge Hub Series is a comprehensive collection of guidance documents designed to support industry professionals in achieving compliance and best practices.

The Series has launched with an in-depth report on ladder safety and protocols. Ladders are indispensable tools in the signage industry, frequently used for installation, maintenance, and inspection tasks. However, improper use can lead to serious accidents. Falls from height remain one of the leading causes of workplace injuries, underscoring the importance of ladder safety.

The Knowledge Hub Series offers clear, practical guidance on ladder selection, safe usage, inspection protocols, and legal responsibilities. Adhering to key regulations, such as the Work at Height Regulations 2005 ensures that organisations and individuals operate safely, reducing risks to team members and the public whilst demonstrating professionalism and compliance (The law – HSE).

Key considerations when working with ladders include:

Choosing the Right Ladder: Ensure the ladder is suitable for the task, considering factors like load capacity, length, and material. Ladders should conform to the EN131 standard for portable steps and ladders ( Safe use of ladders and stepladders – HSE).

Pre-Use Checks: Before each use, conduct a ‘pre-use’ check to identify any obvious defects. Inspect the stiles, feet, rungs, locking mechanisms, and other components for damage or wear ( Safe use of ladders and stepladders – HSE).

Safe Usage Practices: Use ladders only on firm, level ground. Secure the ladder to prevent movement and maintain three points of contact during use. Avoid overreaching and ensure the ladder is positioned at a safe angle (Safe use of ladders and stepladders – HSE).

Securing Ladders: Whenever possible, tie the ladder to a suitable point. If this isn’t feasible, use a ladder stability device or securely wedge the ladder. Footing the ladder should be a last resort (Safe use of ladders and stepladders – HSE).

Training & Competence: Only individuals who are competent – or under the supervision of a competent person – should use ladders. Competence is demonstrated through training, practical experience, and knowledge of safe working practices (Safe use of ladders and stepladders – HSE).

In an industry where regulation is limited, upholding high standards is essential. The Knowledge Hub provides members with reliable resources to navigate compliance, governance, and industry expectations, fostering a culture of safety, innovation, and accountability. By adopting these best practices, BSGA members can enhance workplace safety, reduce liability, and lead with integrity.

The Knowledge Hub Series is a dynamic resource, evolving with industry needs. By promoting open communication and reducing barriers to information, we strengthen our community and ensure every professional benefits from shared knowledge and elevated standards.

We encourage all members to explore these resources, implement best practices, and share feedback to continue shaping the Knowledge Hub Series.
