BSGA Member Profile: Elite Signs & Graphics Ltd

For Simon James, running Elite Signs & Graphics is more than a job; it’s part of the family story. “My dad, Clive, and uncle, Barrie, started the business in 1996. They’d always been into cars, doing pin-striping as a hobby. It just grew from there,” he says.

The roots go even deeper. Simon’s late grandfather was a sign painter too. “It’s like the industry is in our DNA,” he explains.

Simon joined the company in 2002 after finishing his degree. “I fell in love with it straight away,” he says. Fast forward to January 2020—just before Covid hit—and Simon stepped up as sole director when his dad and uncle retired.

“It was a bit daunting, especially with the pandemic kicking off,” he admits. “But we’ve grown the team to eight since then, and I couldn’t be prouder.”

The hard work paid off. In 2024, Elite Signs won Silver at the Sign & Wrap Awards. “That was huge for us. It felt like all our effort was being recognised,” Simon says.

What Makes Elite Signs Stand Out

Elite Signs is all about going the extra mile. “We genuinely care about what we do and the people we do it for,” Simon says. “It’s not just about getting the job done; it’s about creating something we’re all proud of.”

From bold vehicle wraps to standout signage, the team pours everything into their work. “Exceeding expectations is just how we do things,” Simon adds with a smile. “It’s how we’ve built our reputation,” Simon adds.

But Simon knows the industry doesn’t stand still. “Digital signage is growing fast. It’s a challenge, but also an opportunity to expand what we offer,” he says.

One frustration, though, is the lack of training for new talent. “There are no sign-making apprenticeships in Wales. It’s a real shame. With everything being so digital now, you’d think it would be easier to set up online learning for this,” he says.

Why the BSGA Matters

Elite Signs joined the BSGA in 2022. For Simon, it’s about more than just support. “Being a member is like a badge of honour. It shows clients we stick to high standards,” he says.

The benefits go beyond credibility. “As a small company, it’s reassuring to know we’ve got support when we need it and can lean on others for advice.”

What’s Next?

As the industry evolves, Simon hopes for more progress in training and apprenticeships. “We need to make it easier for young people to join the industry. That would make a real difference,” he says.

For now, Elite Signs is focused on doing what they do best—creating work that wows clients. “For us, it’s not just about signs or wraps. It’s about making something we can all be proud of,” Simon says.
