Inspiring the Next Generation of Sign-makers

On Friday, 25th April, Craig Brown, chair of the BSGA had the privilege of attending Sheringham High School’s 6th Form careers day. The event provided an opportunity to showcase the diverse career opportunities available within the signage industry.

Craig was a special guest for the day, speaking with students about the exciting and often overlooked world of sign-making. “I often hear people in the trade expressing concerns about where the next generation of sign makers will come from. The simple answer is that it’s all about making an effort to educate young people about the sector. The signage industry offers fantastic creative opportunities with many transferable skills, and it’s up to us to show them what’s possible.”

The careers day, led by Assistant Headteacher Rebecca Shepherd, was an initiative to introduce students to various industries and help them make informed decisions about their future careers. “We were thrilled to have the BSGA involved,” Rebecca explained. “It’s crucial that we open students’ eyes to the variety of career paths available, and the creative sector, particularly signage, is one that many students might not initially consider. Events like these can make all the difference.”

Throughout the day, students were encouraged to explore the creative potential of the signage industry, which not only offers design and technical roles but also a chance to work in an ever-evolving, hands-on environment. Craig added, “After speaking with the students, I can confidently say that many are now looking at their career options in a new, positive light.”

The BSGA’s involvement in the event is a testament to their commitment to fostering new talent in the industry and ensuring the future of signage is in capable hands. Craig concluded, “If you ever get the chance to support an event like this, I highly recommend it. Being part of the solution is always more effective than complaining about the problem.”

It’s clear that with continued efforts like these, the next generation of sign makers is well on its way.
