“Like it or not, the sign industry in the UK is having to come to terms with increasing legislation governing its activities,” explained David Dyke, BSGA President. “While the latest legislation will have a direct impact on virtually every sign business involved in manufacturing and installing signs, not all signmakers are fully aware of the requirements. The fact is that, in the near future, failure to meet the standards could result in criminal proceedings and custodial sentences for offenders.
“As a service to BSGA members and to the industry at large, we are running the workshops at Sign & Digital UK to explain what the changes are and what must be done to meet the new requirements.
BSGA Workshops at Sign & Digital UK
Workshop 1
An introduction to new standards for sign design and construction
This will explain what the new European Standards (Eurocodes) demand from both sign manufacturers and sign buyers and how they relate to BS559:2009 (the UK standard for sign design).
The workshop will also cover changes to UK Building Regulations and show how these will also impact on the sign industry.
Workshop 2
Planning Regulations
The second workshop will deal with the vexed matter of Planning and, in particular how planning law has a direct impact on sign maintenance. Delegates will be told about a new addendum to BS599 covering sign maintenance and warranties.
“Changes to legislation and planning laws are often ignored or condemned as interference by bureaucrats, but can have a consequences on the success or otherwise of sign businesses,” said David Dyke. “Anyone who commissions, manufactures or installs a sign is bound by the rules and it is vital that everyone involved in the industry understands what is required of them.
“The workshops provide a perfect platform to talk directly to the industry and we are grateful to the show organisers for providing this opportunity.”
Sign & Digital UK 2014 runs from 29th April to 1st May 2014 in Hall 2 at the NEC, Birmingham. The BSGA workshops will feature on each day of the show.
