BSGA Member Scot Signs awarded ISO 9001

It is a great credit to everyone at Scot Signs that their official approval to ISO 9001 and Production control in accordance with BS EN 12899:1-2007 was given on the 9th of July when they were officially added to Lloyds Register. Scot Signs worked closely with LRQA who were extremely helpful at all stages of the process.

The decision to take on the task of gaining such a high standard was based upon the needs of their existing clients and also future demand, especially in light of the Construction Products Directive (CPR) becoming a regulation not just a ‘nice to have’. More importantly Scot Signs considered very carefully the legal definitions of a ‘Road Sign’ and the impact of CPR and CE marking and the effect this would have on their customers. Stuart Dalgleish owner of Scot Signs says “We are not a huge Company by any stretch of the imagination, however that did not make it impossible for us like us to gain the necessary approvals. It is about setting high standards”.

Scot Signs have quietly produced road signage since day one alongside all their commercial products and this was a step that actually fitted both aspects of the business well. “It also had the potential to set us apart from much of the competition” says Stuart. He continues “Having come to signage from an engineering background, the appreciation of the benefits in taking what I would consider a professional stance on our trade and what we do, far outweighs the initial work and cost involved. The positives of all of the systems put in place are of real benefit to the Company and Staff”.

Stuart found that actual working practices changed very little if at all in terms of how they manufacture, however the systems now in place prove both how high a standard they work to and document their systems in such a manner that it actually speeds up training and development of staff. “We also genuinely believe that legislation such as the CPR does much to help our industry by removing many fly by night Companies from the fray at the outset and that we see as a great positive. We have no doubt that in the coming years we will see more controls such as BS EN 12899 being made regulations and hoping it will go away is not the approach”

“As we have all seen the traditional signwriting diminish it is just as possible that the enforcement of regulations and standards on our industry will bring even bigger changes in the future. As an Industry, professional sign companies definitely need to meet these challenges and not simply assume they won’t apply to them or affect the way that a sign company operates.”
